About SWAGID

Solidarity with Women and Girls in Distress (SWAGID) is an indigenous women-led grassroot organization founded in the year 2014 by Pokot and Turkana Pastoralist indigenous women displaced from their pastoral lands due to cross-border ethnic conflicts exacerbated by 2007-2008 post-election violence and cattle rustling. SWAGID mobilizes, influences and promotes the participation of indigenous pastoralists’ women and girls in peace building, governance and security. 

Our work is anchored on five pillars, Pastoralist women’s rights advocacy, Peacebuilding and security, Leadership and governance, Women’s economic empowerment and indigenous girl’s education support and mentorship. SWAGID develops projects for Indigenous pastoralist women who are victims of deep seated discrimination, exclusion, social disparities, poverty, violence, insecurity and aggravated land and natural resource conflicts. SWAGID aims to ensure women’s voices are heard, influence policies as equal leaders, and economic sustenance of indigenous women and girls who depend on pastoral land for their survival, by mobilizing indigenous pastoralist women and girls to stand against cultural oppression while building peace, voices, leadership, safe spaces, active participation in governance and exploring alternatively sustainable innovative climate just economic livelihoods for posterity.
